Wow what a busy few weeks we have had in Year 2! We have kick started our topic all about Hayling Island and have learnt about physical and human geography of the island. We know that a house is human geography as humans have built and made them, but the sea is physical geography because it was made by the earth and has always been here.
In Maths we have been learning how to make tally charts and block diagrams to represent different information and data. We have just moved onto our unit on number and place value, and have been recapping how to create part-part-whole models.
In English we have been using our writing targets to write sentences about different pictures. We have been using time connectives to start our sentences like First, Next, Then, After that… and have learnt how to use conjunctions to extend our sentences like ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘or’.
You’ll never guess what happened to us in our Science lesson but we got sent a letter from a stick insect called Steve! He said that he is from South America and would love to come and visit Hayling Island, but wants to know where to visit on our school grounds and at what time of year. This has kick started our longitudinal study in Science where we are looking at how habitats change over time and through the different seasons.
In the afternoons, the children have settled into our ‘Explore Learning’ time where they have different activities to choose from to develop their learning. These change each week so the children can continue to develop their learning and work on their targets. They are doing brilliantly with this and enjoy the free flow time across the Year 2 unit.
We are delighted with how the children have settled into Year 2 so far and are excited for the year ahead!
